Skim Coat / Wall Putty

Skim coating is a method used to smooth walls or repair damaged drywall. It’s an efficient and lasting solution for fixing minor cracks, filling joints, or leveling flat surfaces. This technique is essential for achieving a Level 5 drywall finish.

Skim Coat / Wall Putty

Wall Putty is a kind of building material used for wall repairing and leveling. It is usually composed of white cement, gypsum, fillers and other auxiliary materials. It is mainly applied to deal with issues such as wall unevenness, cracks or depressions, so as to facilitate the application of wall coatings. The function of wall putty is to fill and smooth out the tiny flaws on the wall and provide a smooth base for the coatings.

Adding additives like cellulose ethers and RDP (Emulsion Copolymer Resin) into wall putty is mainly to improve its performance, making it more suitable for various construction environments and endowing it with better application effects and durability.

Does your wall putty also face these problems?

Weak adhesion

The wall putty cannot adhere well to the base surface, or it sticks to the plastering trowel very easily.

Poor thixotropy

It requires multiple smoothing passes to achieve a smooth surface, resulting in significant paint loss.

Poor waterproof effect

Moisture easily penetrates the wall putty, reducing its lifespan.

Difficult to construct

Short open time, making it difficult to apply.

Poor strength

Prone to cracking, poor wear resistance, and low compressive strength.

Adding additives to wall putty mortar can directly improve the various properties of putty and make wall putty more durable.

MikaZone provides cellulose ether, RDP, and HPS as additives for wall putty performance upgrades, and we also support one-to-one application services to tailor a solution specifically for your wall putty needs.

HPMC/HEMC for Skim Coat / Wall Putty

Mikazone is your reliable HPMC/HEMC supplier in China. We offer high-quality HPMC/HEMC for wall putty, which helps minimize water loss in mortar or cement formulations.

MikaZone HPMC/HEMC for wall putty is ideal for both interior and exterior wall applications in dry mix mortar formulations. Our HPMC/HEMC polymer offers excellent thickening, water retention, and lubrication properties, ensuring superior performance of wall putty.

Recommended HPMC/HEMC Grade for Wall Putty

What changes will HPMC bring to wall putty?

Superior Water Retention

HPMC/HEMC is a dependable and consistent component for producing a uniform putty mixture ready for use. It is formulated to retain adequate moisture in the substrate, ensuring complete hydration.

Enhanced Workability

HPMC/HEMC is an exceptionally efficient additive that quickly dissolves in cold water, boosting the solution's viscosity. Due to its hydrophilic properties, HPMC/HEMC also extends the working time. This leads to reduced waiting periods and increased productivity.

Improved Workability and Efficiency

HPMC/HEMC provides exceptional thickening, dispersion, and film-forming properties. It minimizes moisture evaporation during the application of wall putty, significantly enhancing work efficiency. Therefore, HPMC/HEMC is an excellent choice for wall putty applications.

HPMC/HEMC for Wall Putty

HPMC

HPMC is applicable to the construction and application of wall putty in the vast majority of scenarios and environments. Although its gel temperature (ranging from 55 to 75 °C) is relatively lower than that of HEMC, its performance and effectiveness will not be diminished.

HEMC

HEMC has a relatively higher gel temperature and certain thermal stability. It will not decompose or deteriorate rapidly due to the increase in temperature in a high-temperature environment, and can maintain its functions such as thickening, water retention, and adhesion in wall putty. This enables the wall putty to still maintain relatively good performance under high temperature, ensuring the flatness and smoothness of the wall surface and providing a good foundation for the subsequent decoration construction.

In the high temperature environment, the thermal expansion and cold contraction of the base layer and wall putty are more obvious, which can easily lead to cracks on the wall. High temperatures will also accelerate water evaporation, and excessive water loss will reduce the ease of construction. Therefore, in a high-temperature environment, the chemical additives in putty and mortar should have a certain degree of thermal stability

RDP for Skim Coat / Wall Putty

Adding RDP to wall putty reduces shrinkage cracks during drying, smoothens the surface, and enhances water resistance, making it more durable against moisture.

MikaZone RDP for Wall Putty

How Does RDP Improve Your Wall Putty ?

Film formation and excellent water resistant

Redispersible latex powder disperses to form a highly elastic and flexible film, acting as a secondary adhesive to enhance bonding strength. The film-forming polymer resin serves as a reinforcing material distributed throughout the mortar system, thereby increasing the cohesion of the mortar and preventing it from being damaged by water.

Extend open time and improve workability.

In uncured mortar with added RDP powder, the RDP powder extends the open time for application and enhances thixotropy and anti-sagging properties. This significantly improves the ease of application and workability during wall putty coating and construction.

Strong Adhesion and Strength

After curing, mortar with added RDP powder exhibits significantly improved tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and material density. RDP enhances the adhesion of wall putty to the substrate and provides crack resistance, effectively countering microcracks.

HPS for Skim Coat / Wall Putty

Starch ether is added to wall putty to improve its workability, stability, and application properties.

MikaZone® Hydroxypropyl Starch Ether (HPS) offers significant advantages for wall putty applications. It enhances workability, making the putty smoother and easier to apply, resulting in a uniform finish. HPS also improves water retention, which prevents cracking and ensures a consistent texture as the putty dries. Additionally, it boosts adhesion, ensuring the putty adheres well to the wall surface for a durable, long-lasting result. Safe and versatile, HPS is an excellent choice for improving the performance of wall putty formulations.

Improve rheology and thixotropy

Starch ether can regulate the rheology of putty, making it easier to apply and less prone to sagging during application. This thixotropic effect helps the putty adhere better to vertical surfaces and improves its anti-sagging performance.

Improve Workability and Surface Smoothness

Starch ether enhances the smoothness and workability of putty, making it easier to apply with a smoother finish. It helps prevent rough marks or uneven application, resulting in a better surface appearance.
